Moonlight Cruise (Goose) is a very athletic Irish Sport Horse that would make an excellent Dressage, Hunter Jumper, Fox Hunter, or Event prospect. Goose is by the Irish Sport Horse Stallion “Cruising” (By Sea Crest) and was imported to the USA as a weanling in 2007. Talented enough for a professional, Goose is also the young prospect every amateur has been looking for! Goose was started in January of 2010 and has progressed smoothly in his training. Still currently in professional training, Goose has the mind that everyone desires in a young horse! He is quiet, personable, and always in a willing frame of mind, thus making him the amateur’s perfect first young horse. Goose has a ground covering“10” walk and a fantastic trot that is extremely comfortable to sit. In addition, he has lovely rhythmical canter that will make it down the lines with ease. Goose was started over fences this fall and is very happy with his new job. Showing extreme athleticism over fences, he is jumping 2’3” with confidence. Goose is a very careful jumper and has the classic form over fences that everyone looks for in a prospect. He is excellent out on the trails, either alone or with company. Goose has been taken off the property to schooling shows and takes every new environment in stride with confidence. Goose trailers with ease, crossties, has great ground manners, and is solid and sound. Moonlight Cruise is an extremely talented young horse with a wonderful mind and will flourish in any discipline.

On Monday night Nina Ligon was awarded the HSBC Rising Star Award at the FEI Awards ceremony in Rio De Janiero. This award is given each year to a person aged 14 to 21 who demonstrates outstanding sporting talent and commitment. Based in Virginia, dual national Nina rides for the Kingdom of Thailand. At the age of 15, Nina rode on the USA junior team at the FEI North American Juniors and Young Riders Championships. Her successes prompted the Thai National Team to invite her to compete with them at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Pattaya. As the Thai Eventing team’s youngest and first female rider, she won Individual Gold and contributed to Thailand’s Team Gold win. Nina’s fourth place at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou led the Thai team to a Silver medal. She has become an inspiration for young riders in Thailand and her success and hard work are significantly contributing to the Thai Equestrian Federation’s leadership efforts to develop Eventing, nationally and throughout Asia.

Hi Jodi,

I bought Salty through you about a year and a half ago, and I just wanted to tell you how amazing he is and how much I love him. He has won Groton House 2 years in a row, won UNH horse trials, and we are going to a long format 3 Day event this summer. Salty is an even better horse than I could have ever imagined. He has boosted my confidence, as he will jump anything in sight! I just wanted to thank you for helping me find my best friend. Please let his old owners know how much he is loved here in New Hampshire(even though we all think he likes it better in SC because he spent the winter there this year and didnt want to come home!).

had a great weekend at Full Gallop's horse show in the end of May, Lynsey and Loper attended the dressage sessions with Amy McElroy.

Loper and Lynsey were proud to say they received a score of 37 in both Novice A and Novice B tests, first time doing both tests in area in front of a dressage judge!

Lynsey had Loper in a month of training back during the winter and when asked what she thought about the training and how it effected her riding she was quoted with,

"If you want someone to make a difference, that someone is Jodi Hemry." -LS

Lynsey and Loper also recently were drawn for the Dover Saddlry Trivia contest!!! They won a bucket full of goodies from Dover Saddlry. Thanks to Dover and Facebook for making those fun trivia contests possible!

I remember quite a few years back watching some reruns on the television in our living room of Rolex. I didn’t know the riders, or the horses, or even much about Eventing – but I knew it included cross-country and therefore I deemed every eventer was indeed….crazy. If someone had told me in a few years time I’d be going cross-country…

I have been riding since I was seven-years-old, I started at an Eventing barn called Flora Lea, but had no idea they even were eventers! I was a kid and I wanted horses all the time. However, the pleas of wanting a pony never really did win my parents over. I wouldn’t say I really started to learn to ride however until my years at SCAD riding outside of school learning dressage at Rose Hill and then later on riding at a barn closer to school, Silverthorne Run Stables.

Jen Helgrin introduced me to Eventing. She took me to my first show, and even let me take along her pretty palomino mare. On the way to the show, we had spoken of a Youtube video that had shown Karen O’Connor almost falling off during an event on cross-country. Karen managed to bounce right back in the tack and continue on with the event. This filed back into my memory for safe keeping. I remember sitting in the start box not really sure what I was getting myself into… how does Sunshine know, I meanknow to jump up the bank? Sunshine taught me to never underestimate the first fence! On my first fence, first cross-country event ever, she balked and threw me for a loop! I hung on for dear life thinking if Karen could do it, so could I! Alas it wasn’t to be, I hung for two minutes trying to push back on and landed on my feet. But they let me finish the event anyway!

Needless to say that was my first introduction to cross-country, and I was hooked. After graduating from college I became a working student for a year at Bit O Woods farm in NJ. I learned a lot about Eventing and bought a new horse, Loper. No, I didn’t pick his name, but am superstitious enough not to change it. It took 20 horses to look at to find the right one, and I remember thinking I AM NOT GETTING A SMALL HORSE AGAIN! But when you sit on the right horse, they say you know it, and I did when I sat on him… "Shoot, I guess I’m getting another small horse."

Loper and I spent that year at Bit O Woods where he learned to be a horse again [the previous farm didn't have turnout and so he was used to being in a stall 24/7]. Through lessons with Sally Cousins, Megan Pappler, and Lauren Lutcavage we grew a lot. I introduced him to cross-country and turnout. My first event on Loper was at Fair Hill, all I can remember from the event was hanging on while I tried to steer my happy horse through cross-country and the biggest smile on my face when we finished.

While I was a working student I received notification that I had been accepted into the Graduate Program at the Medical College of GA for the Medical Illustration program, and was instantly excited. The school is located in Augusta, not 20 minutes from horse country…Aiken :) This meant I would be able to go to school for my passion, as well as bring my pony with me. Loper was shipped down to Marrinson Stables and I started school. We’ve been training at Marrinson with Jodi Hemry for eight months now and don’t want to be anywhere else! I’ve gotten opportunities to learn from phenomenal people like Nina Ligon, Sally Cousins, Amy Boyle, and of course Jodi Hemry. Loper and I are still new to Eventing, and we’re learning from the best of the best and making the greatest connections through the most amazing people.

On loan from Jodi, I worked for Nina at the Fork trials a few weeks ago, and while I get to see the advanced fences up close and work with amazing horses, I don’t know that I’d ever want to climb so high up the totem pole. I’m okay with being the little rider watching all these amazing professionals take on the big fences. I’d be happy to maybe go a Training three-day in the future. Loper may be a little guy [I often call him my little sports car] and we’re only jumping the little stuff – but he has the spitfire to run and jump high, and hopefully we can continue on together until the day I can retire him in my back yard. He will still run up to the gate as he’s getting older [for his favorite, a banana] and look forward to the day we will say remember those good ole cross-country days.

Amy Boyle and Skip To My Lew had a a great weekend running through the FEI 1* tests this weekend at Full Gallop Farm. Lynsey Steinberg and Dragon Tea competed in the combined beginner novice test and practiced another novice dressage round. In the CT Dragon Tea and Lynsey placed 5th finishing on their dressage score of a 37! Thanks to Lizza Schaffer who was able to spend the day with us, watch, record and play!

Last weekend Fair Hill Horse Trials took place with Jodi Hemry and In Style completing their CIC 2 star event! They did spectacularly with all the foul weather that had been afoot that weekend. Amy Boyle with Skip To My Lew completed their event in the Preliminary division. Jodi also competed Charles Harbour in the Preliminary Division. Although it was only a week, we missed both ladies while they were gone and will be glad to have them back home again.

Sporting Days Farm Recap

This weekend had some lousy weather but some fantastic riding from our Riders, Jodi, Amy, Bee and Lynsey.

Amy Boyle and Skip to My Lew won their first preliminary event for the start of their season!

Amy and Lew had a 27 in dressage and it only got better from there.

Jodi Hemry and In Style finished 3rd in the CT Intermediate devision on Friday. Jodi Hemry also took Charles Harbour Preliminary this weekend and they had a stunning performance! Charles finished strongly in his division with a confident x-country round.

Bee Ruane and Chance had also a wonderful two rounds in their CT with dressage and stadium. We wanted to thank Bee for all her hard work this winter in Aiken and we can't wait to have her back again next year during the winter season. Have a safe trip home! We will miss you!

Amanda Bee Ruane

1. Where are you from and how long have you been riding?
I am from Sarver, PA and I have been riding for 12 years.

2. What is one place in Aiken you feel every person should visit at least once?
Takko Sushi, fanstastic restaurant and great people.

3. What do you feel was your most valuable lesson learned this year?
I finally gained the feeling of what it feels like to truly rebalance my horse before a fence on cross country.

4. What is your horse's favorite treat?
Pretezel M&Ms

5. What has been your favorite x-country course so far?
Paradise Farm, the course rode great and I felt the Training Level course had some elements that was a geared toward preparing riders for a move up to Prelim.

6. How did you get your current horse Chance?
One of my boarders found him online and he was totally out of my price range, but I decided to make an offer. It took the current owner a few weeks but she finally decided to accept.

7. What has been the biggest lesson Chance has taught you?
Paitence and problem solving. Chance is an older horse with maintainance issues and I have learned to really listen to him and be a his detective so I can find ways to help him do his job better.

8. Name one item you couldn't live without.
My cell phone! I own a farm back in PA so it is must have for keeping in touch with my business while away in Aiken, SC.

9. What is your favorite historical horse, story, or rider?
My favorite horse story is The Silver Stallion. It is about a wild brumby in Australia that would rather be dead than be caught. The movie still brings tears to my eyes.

10. Name one pet peeve. .
Arrogance. That is why I love horses, they humble you, or if they haven't......they will.

Paradise Trials Recap!

Jodi Hemry on Charles Harbour and Amy Boyle on Skip To My Lew had a FANTASTIC weekend at Paradise Farm Horse trials. Jodi and Charles started off great in a very large pack for their first Preliminary event of the season. Charles Harbour has certainly been in his prime element these last few weeks.

Jodi said it was probably his best cross country event yet!

Amy started off very strong with a 27 in her Dressage test AND finished clean in her phases throughout the weekend, she finished on her dressage score! She beat out some great competition out of 30 RIDERS!

Also - last weekend at the Pine Top first event of the season, our very own Jodi Hemry was interviewed by John Nunn for his Nunn Finer boots!!!! - Nunn is offering $30,000 in prize money for a CCI3* "Bit of Britain Challenge." $30,000 will be awarded to a horse and rider combination if they win both the CCI3* at Jersey and the CCI3* at Fair Hill this year. Had a FANTASTIC Weekend AT the PSJ Show!

Jodi Hemry took home many ribbons this weekend with her two horses, In Styles and Charles Harbour in the high schooling classes at the PSJ jumpers show in Aiken. It is their first show of the season and with how they were jumping it looks like it's going to be a fabulous show year!

XC Schooling At Gibbes Farm!

We had a spectacular time with the nice weather yesterday at Gibbes Farm! A wonderful property with a lot to jump. There were a lot of trailers and riders out enjoying the jumps and the day. Will Coleman brought a few students and horses and was out having some good rides, and Jodi Hemry had the best XC rides with her two rockstar mounts: Charles and Styles.

LS: Roxy, good to see you. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy day for this interview. I have to say you are a fantastic little doggy that brings smiles to everyone's faces at the farm.

ROXY: No one can resist my charm. [not budging but tail thumping on the grass]

LS: And the farm website was updated. Some excellent lesson photos there.

ROXY: I agree and ... OH! A STICK will you throw it? Please please please!

LS: Ah... um.

ROXY: OH HOW BOUT A PINE CONE!

LS: Anything exciting going on as of late? Show season is about to start.

ROXY: OH!! I got to play with visiting family that came to town! Oh it was SO DELIGHTFUL! I got to play fetch and catch and all sorts of silly games with the two-legs for a long time. We even got some new boarders and Team Marrinson is going to start going to horse shows too! AND WE got these AMAZING team jackets that are coming!

LS: Yes...I know about the jackets... but Roxy, they are for humans...err um... two-legs?

ROXY: Wait... what? But there's no doggy versions?

LS: Eh..um no but don't be upset because.. holy cow is that a PINE CONE?!

ROXY: WHERE!

Our hearts go out to the eventing community as the passing of rider Colin Davidson took place this week. Colin was going to grab a Christmas tree for the holidays when his truck was in a motor vehicle accident which unfortunately ended his life.

Jumping Branch Farm Trials...

It's been one heck of a weekend so far and it's not even over yet! We cruised on over to Jumping Branch farm for Julie Zappapas wonderful unrecognized horse trials. We had two riders in the Novice devision.

Amy Boyle and her horse (for sale come see on our website!) Rowdy But Nice who ended up placing 4th with a beautiful clean all around rounds and lovely dressage. Lynsey Steinberg and Dragon Tea had their FIRST ever NOVICE ride at an event! They both finished with clean over fences in both rounds!

Student and Competition News

Jodi had a spectacular event this weekend with Charles Harbour, a wonderful clean cross country and lovely dressage round at Chatahoochee Hills. They had previously ran at Paradise Farm finishing in 5th place with a beautiful cross country and dressage phases.

Harbor Night just won her very own jumpers class the weekend before Paradise Horse Farm trials!!! Come and check her out because this fancy mare is for sale. (See below) Jodi Hemry also took Charles Harbor to Aiken Fall Classic Jumpers Show and they won 3rd place in the jumpers class! Amy Boyle with Skip to My Lew also brought home a 3rd place ribbon. Congrats to you fine riders!

Amy Boyle with Skip to My Lew finished this weekend AND WON 1st PLACE in her devision!!! Once again only her first month running Preliminary! Amy was one of the few to run the Preliminary round without any time penalties and the only double clean round in stadium and xc to end on our dressage score of 35.! Incredible all three phases. Lynsey Steinberg and Dragon Tea had a lovely jumping lesson this week at the farm. Communication between hrose and rider is key and with Jodi Hemry as their coach they are coming along very well. We are all excited to see the new jump fences in the jumping ring this month! Come and see them they are painted and beautiful!

Mr. Marrinson was visiting for the Aiken Fall Steeplechase this weekend, welcome back!

Jodi Hemry & Co (Roxanne and Green Bean) Our Fearless Leader!

As we were keeping tabs over on the WEG's Our hearts went out to Kim Severson when her horse had to be pulled from the competition due to an infection of the leg and to Becky Holder with her horse Courageous Comet as well. But we'd also like to congratulate all of the riders, especially the American team for their hard work and dedication during the games.

Favorite quote from the weekend had to be from Boyd Martin in an interview with SmartPak...

"Question.  What are you going to be thinking going into show jumping tomorrow with Neville?"

Answer. Trying to get to one side of the jump to the other without knocking anything over."

Since our last entry, a few events have taken place including the much awaited Land Rover USEA American Eventing Championships, Full Gallop, Fair Hill International, and two events at Poplar Place. At the AEC's we had Skip To My Lew, Charles Harbour, and In Style all ride beautiful dressage rounds, and all clean cross country! The fences were maxed in most divisions, and the courses had some great questions to be answered. It was a busy weekend with all the best of the best coming together to compete and network at the new Chattahoochee Hills facility. The Team at Marrinson Stables would like to give a very special thank you to Ralph Marrinson for making everything possible, we were lucky to have his support at the AEC's through out the entire weekend.

BIG NEWS! Jodi Hemry, after a very promising 3rd place finish at Full Gallop this summer, and Charles Harbour finishing 2nd at Fair Hill International in the Preliminary division with almost 20 other competitors, had a fantastic first cross country CIC** of the season on In Style! Promising schooling sessions with Heidi White have only strengthened their possibilities for better rides at the upcoming move-up with In Styles this season to the CIC** level. Charles Harbour won an astounding 5th place finish at Poplar Place Farm's recognized event this past weekend. He had an fantastic dressage and clean cross country phase.

Amy Boyle & Skip To My Lew 2nd Place - First Preliminary Ride!

Amy Boyle and Skip To My Lew had an AMAZING first preliminary ride at Pine Top this past weekend! They finished in 2nd place with a wonderful double clear stadium round and clean cross country! Congrats!

They also competed as well at Poplar and in her first training of this season won 2nd place (pictured above)! They finished with a phenomenal 2nd place at Full Gallop's Summer Recognized Trials and a great dressage and clean cross country at the AEC's (pictured at the top) and another great event at the previous Poplar Farm trials.

We'd also like to extend open arms to our new student, hailing from Southern NJ, Lynsey and her horse Dragon Tea (aka Loper). Lynsey is attending the Medical College of GA's graduate studies program in Medical Illustration and in only being here since August has been developing, with Jodi's coaching, a better communication between horse hands, seat, and rider. With Jodi as her coach, Lynsey entered and placed 6th in her first recognized horse trails with Loper at Full Gallop Farm! With the help of Laura Wagner Dressage and Jodi's coaching skills - Loper and Lynsey have been working hard to move up hopefully in the spring to Novice. More excited than anything to have her first official USEA record up on the site with a 6th place finish at Full Gallop Farm's recognized horse trails. They have just finished their most recent show at Pine Top's Recognized show with a double clear stadium and the best dressage round yet!

Special Notes

We wanted to send out our condolences to Laura Wagner who recently had to say goodbye to her first mare, Sherriff, who lost her battle to cancer this month. Sherriff was Laura's first horse and just this month starred in the Aiken Horse about retired horses past stories and the hearts they touch along the way. Marrinson Stables also would like to express their condolences to Hilda Donahue on the loss of her eventing partner Extravagance, who were competing in the
CIC *** division at the September Horse Trials at Poplar Place Farm and suffered an injury associated with a fall at a fence. Extravagance was humanely euthanized. Our hearts go out to you and your lost partner.

The Team at Marrinson Stables would like to give a very special thank you to Ralph Marrinson for making everything possible. We would not be the first class facility that we are with out the support of Mr. Marrinson!!!

We've all heard of the popular TV show Survivor, well surviving an eventing winter and spring season should become a TV show of it own! Many laughs and much suspense is a part of "an eventer's Season." From running cross-country in a February freezing rain to hiding from a thunderstorm, lightning touching all around, in a grove of trees while walking the cross-country course, finally making a run for it yelling to Jodi "there is my number 11 fence" and Jodi responding as we dash, "ok, just ride it out of stride!" All this brings the question to mind, "is it worth it?" The long hours, the freezing fingers and toes,the sweat, the tears, sitting on pins and needles, "is it WORTH it? The answer: YES!!! The sense of fulfillment when improving your dressage score by 2 points, or crossing the finish line on cross-country under time, and leaving ALL the rails in the cups, your noble beast giving you everything he has, oh yes, it is worth it! Busy, busy beavers Marrinson Stables has been this winter and spring, check out the news!

Jodi Hemry trained every week with Kim Severson while Kim was in Aiken during the winter, traveling over to Kim's for many very successful lessons!! Amy Boyle had the opportunity to take a cross-country lesson with Kim as well and was thrilled with the results and the improvement with her mare, Skiptomylew. Jodi also spent a busy winter and spring teaching and schooling her students, Brad Shuler and Layton Moss.

February and March were successful months for Marrinson Stables' Harbor Night. In Februrary Night competed at Full Gallop finishing 6th. She also competed at Paradise Farm's February Horse Trial finishing 7th. In March, Harbor Night finished a close 2nd at Full Gallop's March H.T. Marrinson Stables is now offering for sale this special and talented mare, check her out on the website!

Marrinson Stable's In Style has had a very successful winter and spring season. Finishing 8th in Preliminary at Full Gallop's February H.T. Jodi moved In Style up to intermediate at the Pine Top Advanced H.T. in late February. Completing his first Intermediate H.T. of the season at Pine Top, In Style finished 12th. Jodi and In Style then headed to Southern Pines in March, taking 9th at the Intermediate level. They completed Chattahoochee Hills H.T. in April, finishing 11th in the Open Intermediate. Poplar Place H.T. in May was very successful! Jodi and In Style finished on their dressage score and placed 6th in the Open Intermediate! In Style and Jodi are now qualified for a CIC** and plan to compete in the fall.

Marrinson Stables would like to give a big welcome back to Marrinson Stable's Charles Harbor, whom after a long break has returned to eventing! To blow out the cobwebs, Jodi competed Charles Harbor in the Training Level Division at Poplar Place in May. After receiving a 30 in dressage, Charles was clean in stadium and finished after a clean cross-country on their dressage score!! Charles and Jodi took 2nd in their comeback show! They then headed to the Virginia Three-Day Event and H.T. at the end of May. Charles ran in the Preliminary division finishing in 4th place. One more event to warm up for the fall season for Jodi and Charles Harbor, Poplar Place H.T. in June. They had a fantastic dressage test, were smooth as a hunter in stadium, and ROCKED cross-country, taking 6th in the Open Preliminary! A very nice warm up to gear up for Intermediate in the fall.

Marrinson Stables would also like to welcome back Amy Boyle's mare, Skiptomylew, to competition! After a very long lay up, Amy and Lew had a very successful season back. To get their feet wet Amy competed Lew at Paradise Farm in February in the Novice division recieving a 30 in dressage and finishing on their dressage score, the competition was ferocious, a score of 30 earned them 7th place! On to Full Gallop! The duo recieved a 2nd in the Open Novice. One more Novice to complete and Amy and Lew can move up to Training!! They took third in the Open Novice at Pine Top in March, a win as far as they were concerned as Phillup Dutton help the top two spots! At the Training level in April, Amy took Lew to Chattahoochee Hills. After scoring a 28 in dressage in their first Training, they took 5th place! Amy and Lew completed and took 2nd at Poplar place May H.T., qualifying for the Area III Championships. Amy and Lew had a great run at the June Poplar Place H.T., securing their spot in the AEC's. Congratulations on a great comeback!

In the mean time Brad Shuler and Layton Moss have been working hard and gearing up for a summer season of horse shows. Brad competed in his first USDF dressage show with a Gentle Ben, placing 2nd and 6th the first day at the Training Level. Receiving a high score of 62% on the second day Brad earned 1st place, taking the blue home!! Layton Moss and her young horse, Jack Daniels, competed in Full Gallop's June H.T. After having a fantastic cross-country run and a picture perfect stadium, Layton and Jack took 6th place. Good luck to all students in the upcoming summer horse shows!!

Busy Busy!!

Well, Marrinson Stables has had a very busy few weeks! Late in January Jodi and her students started the season off by schooling at Gibbs Farm and despite a cold rainy day the schooling was a huge success. Jodi took two Marrinson Stables horses, both were fabulous! Wow was that water complex deep, she was soaked! Jodi also brought along a young sale horse, Valentino, who learned a lot and received a positive experience. Two of Jodi's students brought their horses to take lessons with Jodi. Brad had a successful run on Salty, and Amy and her mare had a blast! Amy and Lew jumped their first sunken road and preliminary water to a huge success!

Jodi's first show of the season was a success as well. Jodi took two of Ralph Marrinson's horses to the Full Gallop Intermediate H.T. on February 3rd. In Style ran preliminary and jumped clean finishing on his dressage score! Harbor Night ran training, jumping clean, and finished on her dressage score placing 6th. Congratulations! A great start for the winter and fall season.

Jodi is training with Kim Severson a couple of times a week while she is in Aiken. The lessons are going great and Jodi loves to have Kim close by.

Amy and Lew missed their first two shows but should be back in action for Paradise Farm at the end of February.

Congratulations to Valentino on his wonderful new home. Valentino was purchased by Cecilia Southern, who lives in Southern Pines. We wish you the best of luck! Another congratulations is in order for Salty on his new home with a very cool kid! We know the two of you will have a great partnership.
